Before you even start looking for a web hosting provider you need to be sure what technologies you wish to use.
If you use php which is a widely used general programming language which is especially suited for web developments
then you would normally host your web site on a Unix or Linux server.

more expensive to use.
Once you have decided on the technology you wish to use the next think is to
know how much web space you require now and in the future.
You must also think of the bandwidth you will need. This is hard to do at the
start as you do not know how popular your website will be before it is launched,
but if you have video or sound on your website bandwidth usage is likely to be
much higher.
There are some web hosting companies that will offer you a free web hosting trial so you can test all the features of the web host before parting with your money. So you have nothing to loose.
