Unusually High Levels Of Snow for Britain Are Stopping Employees From Making The Journey To Work
We appear to have had higher levels of snow this year than for a number of years in Britain. Because of this, we are unable to cope well. Even small amounts of snow have in the past caused difficulties for the highways agency in keeping our roads clear, and the railway lines have had an equally tough time ensuring trains can get where they need to be. Airports, too, suffer as it is dangerous for planes to land or take off.
As I run an Internet Business from my home, I did not need to go into the snow, but with a quick view of a social network site this morning, I saw posts from a lot of my contacts. Quite a few of this morning’s messages revolved around the snow. There were some moaning that they were unable to get to the office due to inaccessible roads and were therefore going to Work From Home. Others advised that their children were at home as the schools were shut, due to the fact that teachers were not able to make their way into school. Yet another was uncertain whether he would be able to get back to Britain as airports were closed, or working at reduced levels.
How many working days are to be lost due to bad weather? It would certainly make sense, if the snow is to persist for any length of time, for companies to have policies in place to allow workers to Work From Home when weather is poor. Venturing out on hazardous roads, in order to try to get to the office, could cause major headaches for workers, anxious not to let their employer down. Being on roads which are not properly gritted, or not gritted at all, can be the cause of accidents – especially as we are not accustomed to driving in such conditions in this country. Cars can break down as they overheat, which means more work for the rescue services, which means everybody has to wait longer for recovery.
The way many businesses work today, staff are sat at their computer, working independently of one another, so it should be possible for them to do these Online Jobs at their home. With a secure VPN company-confidential data should not be compromised and the knowledge by staff, that they can just Work From Home when the journey to work would be hazardous would be beneficial to all.
If any staff did manage to get to work through the dreadful weather, no doubt they would be spending the rest of the day with one eye at the window, making sure that it was not getting worse and they would be unable to venture home again. They may make it to the office, only to let staff know that they have tried, then immediately leave and return home, as the weather deteriorates, maybe collecting some work which they can do over the next few days from their house if the weather does not pick up.
We undertake a lot of Internet Business these days, even if we are working in an office, and this can be done just as simply from the house as from an office. Getting companies to set up a list of Online Jobs which staff can comfortably and confidently carry out from their house would be a major step forward. Perhaps they could set up a SMS service, whereby when the weather is poor workers are told early not to try to venture to the office, but work on the Online Jobs which have been made available to them. This could lead to fewer road accidents, less stressed staff and a more productive workforce.
