Making Time For Home Based Businesses
In a recent survey, the top challenge listed by people running home based businesses was: not enough time in the day. Most of us feel we are working at every possible moment and still not getting done half of what we need. The good news is that there is a solution.
Now, of course we cannot add more hours to our day, or cut down on activities like sleep or family life without damage to our health or quality of life. But there is a lot that we can do to maximize our productivity by sticking firmly to a few basic time management guidelines.
1. Set out a rough plan for the week at the beginning of each week. Try to factor in a certain number of hours per day. For example, you might be able to work from 9 to 3 when the kids are at school. That’s 5 hours per day plus one for lunch and brief breaks from the computer. If you need to take time out for a non-business appointment one day, try to find a time one evening or at the weekend when you can make up that time.
2. Once you have your hours set, keep to them and do not allow interruptions. Let the machine get the phone, or if you do a lot of business by phone, get a business number that you will answer at certain times, and let your business contacts know what time to call you.
3. Check your business email 2 or 3 times per day and close it for the rest of the time. Have a separate address for personal email and don’t check it at all during your work time.
4. At the end of your working day, make a to-do list for the next day, and prioritize it. Next day you will do the most important task first – not the easiest!
5. Don’t set your goals too high, and don’t let your to-do list become too long. Break down large tasks into smaller chunks that will fit into one day. If you create impossible goals, you will lose motivation and set yourself up for failure.
6. Try to find a mentor – someone who will take a personal interest in your progress and offer constructive criticism as well as encouragement. Then try not to listen to all the other voices from friends, family and the self-styled ‘gurus’ of home based businesses who will all be pushing you in different directions.
