Comprehending The Meaning Of Affiliates and Promoting Your Website… For Dummies
A little confusing at first until you know what it actually means. An affiliate is anyone with a website, blog, newsletter or any other means of running advertisements to promote another website or business that sells products or services. This affiliate agrees to display these advertisements for a monetary consideration.
Still not getting it? Ok, say I’m an affiliate of Sears or Target or Wal-Mart…
Because I promote them, displaying Wal-Mart ads on my website. That’s as far as it goes. I don’t have any further involvement. When someone visits my website and clicks on a Target ad I get credited for that click which sends that visitor to their website.
It doesn’t matter if they buy anything, I’ll still get paid for that click. Some companies pay a commission on all sales too, usually a 7-10% commission, depending on the company.
By now you’ve got a idea on what an affiliate is. Some companies have their own affiliate sign up page. Others use affiliate networks such as Commission Junction, probably the largest network. So you’d join up as an affiliate in their network and be able to choose the companies you want to be an affiliate of. Kind of like an employment agency.
Now the success or failure of any affiliate depends on the amount of website traffic your website receives. Therefore most affiliates use many techniques to get that traffic. It’s a numbers game. The more unique visitors the more clicks and the more money. Many affiliates will have a blog or forum because they create content as well as repeat visitors.
Search engines such as Yahoo, AOL, MSN and of course the big dog Google love sites with content and will reward accordingly. By that I mean listing your site in their directory higher than a site with no content. This will increase your visitors dramatically.
Another way of generating website traffic is through links. A link is when another website places a link on one of their website pages to your website. The more of these the better! You can never have enough links.
Some sites trade links with each other, this can work but the best links are one way links. You can do a 3 way trade also. This is when you link to site A.
Site A wants you to link to another site he owns, site B. That’s a 3 way and those are good too. Another good method is joining a link trade network.
But here’s another method I recommend above all!
Free One Way Links!
Another great way to get more links is participating in forums that allow links in your signature. Like I said The Search Engines love content sites and can you think of a better place to have your link?
